A NOTE FROM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CORONA

Chapman Swifts,

A few quick updates from your Chapman team. Our teachers and students have been engaged in the practice of welcoming each morning in Circle. This is a Restorative Practive that allows everyone to share and feel connected to their school and each other. Teachers have also brought the practice of Classroom Circle Chats to discuss evolving issues. We also use the Restorative Justice process to help students solve problems together, own their part and look for common solutions. Ask your child what they discussed with the whole class each day in addition to your regular check-in about what they learned. Here is an Introduction to Circle Forward, a resource we are using.

Attendance is key, students can’t grow and learn when they are not here. Continuing with our attendance celebrations, for the past 2 weeks the classroom with the highest attendance percentage was Ms. Lyons’ class with 100% of her students being at school for at least 9/10 days. Congratulations! We will make the official announcement for the class at our Live Round-up this Friday 1/20. They get to be proud and keep the Attendance Bearded Dragon in their class for 2 weeks!

We are on a role with efforts to keep the cafeteria / lunch space CLEAN and CALM. Students are earning swift birds for their class as we check their tables for cleanliness at the end of their lunch. Please encourage your students to treat their school as their own home, as in keep it clean. We remind students to make sure they are careful walking with their tray and as they are eating. If they have an accident or make a mess, they should help clean up. A request for more parent volunteers during lunch and a huge shout-out to our most consistent parent. Gary, thank you for your presence and work during our lunch time!

Half of the year is over. Next Friday 1/27 is grading day for teachers, no school for students. Please be on the lookout for report cards coming home soon and continue to encourage your students to try their best at school. We are here to build on their learning together.

OUR FALL FUNDRAISER IS COMING TO AND END...

Our Fall Fundraiser is coming to an end!  Friday, January 27th is our official close to the Chapman Fall Fundraiser, so if you are still looking at making a donation MAKE IT HAPPEN.  For all of those who have made a donation, thank you so much. These donations make a huge impact to Chapman Elementary School.

https://friendsofchapman.org/2022/11/11/2022-chapman-fall-fundraiser/

We are not able to give an accurate update on where we are at with this fundraising effort as the funds that were donated via company match programs take a month or two to get to us.  We hope to be able to update the Chapman Community at the end of the month.

Dining for Dollars is a great program where Chapman partners with local restaurants with a goal to boost business for the restaurant by sending the Chapman Community to dine on a specific day, and in return, Chapman will receive a predetermined percentage of the revenue from the day.  Plus it gives Chapman families a chance to meet new families and reconnect with those they haven't seen for a while.

Join us at Breakside Brewery on Sunday, February 5th for our first Dining for Dollar$ event of 2023.  Breakside Brewery has set up their dining for dollars program differently than the past restaurants that we have partnered with.  They will take their normal Sunday earnings and will donate all proceeds that exceed that amount.  This means we have an opportunity to make more than our typical 15% if we spread the word and show up in groves!  And the good news is, Breakside Brewery has a lot of space.  So if you are needing to plan a group or family outing, maybe a mid season basketball party, or want to meet other Chapman families, get this Dining for Dollar$ on your calendar.

LET'S GET TO KNOW ....

MRS. FORD (KINDERGARTEN)!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

My all-time favorite food dishes are anything made with fresh home-grown tomatoes: BLTs, salsa, caprese, red sauce, & more. There's just nothing better than a sweet, juicy, slightly-acidic home-grown tomato. There's even a song about it called Homegrown Tomatoes by Guy Clark! Truth be told, I didn't even like tomatoes until I was an adult. Who knew? I just had to try them. Fresh makes all the difference!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A CHAPMAN TEACHER?

My favorite thing about being a teacher at Chapman is the building. I love old buildings and learning about the history that occurred at the site over time. The world's fair was held here in 1905, adjacent to Chapman Elementary.

YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHEN NOT TEACHING?

My favorite thing to do on the weekends is to sleep in! But after I'm up - I enjoy long walks in my neighborhood, gardening in my greenhouse and yard, and spending time with my husband and pets.

---

Here's a picture of my husband, Chris, and I in Astoria, Oregon. Talk about a place with a lot of history! We love walking the hills and admiring the ornate houses and other buildings. They have so many fascinating museums there. The Columbia River Maritime Museum has lots of hands-on engaging activities for kids of all ages.

Hello Chapman Parents,

Chapman STEAM night will be on Thursday April 27th. As with previous years, we've reserved the Oregon Reptile Man and for the first time OMSI will be in the house!  Since this will be a PTA sponsored event, we will need LOTS of VOLUNTEERS to help us. There will be a need for ALL KINDS of helpers, including some to help prep and those the night of the event. Even if Science isn't your thing, we will still need help with set up, clean up, and directing people where to go. Older kids can even use this for "service hours", so please let me know if you (or someone you know) wants to help or be a part of the STEAM committee. Thank you!

As always, thank you so much for your support!
