A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL VAN DER WOLF

Hello Chapman Families,

What a wild and wintry farewell to February we’ve had! I hope everyone was able to stay safe and enjoy the rare snow days.

As we are coming up on the Chapman School building's 100-year anniversary, you might wonder about some of the upgrades that have been happening in and around our aging yet bustling halls. We have recently benefited from the district’s current work on making ADA improvements across the district. In the most recent phase, more legible signs have been placed throughout the school that are inclusive, including the addition of Braille. Over the summer, the portables will be having an accessible ramp installed. A handrail is going to be installed at the front of the building and the auditorium stage will be accessible. Basement bathrooms will have accessible options added. All of this is planned to happen over the summer months. In addition, new door handles were installed on every classroom door that enable staff to lock doors from the inside.

We are still building on our attendance initiative and looking for improved attendance throughout the school. Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success—both in school and in life. When you prioritize school attendance, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior, and have a better chance of graduating from high school.

Students who have consistent attendance are more likely to have school success.

  • Students are more likely to stay out of trouble

  • Students are learning important social and problem-solving skills that they will use throughout their lives.

  • Students with regular attendance, even in elementary school, are much more likely to graduate from high school.

  • High school graduates make, on average, a million dollars more than someone who does not complete high school, throughout their work life.

Don’t let absences add up!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

Watermelon with salt, lime, and chili!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A CHAPMAN TEACHER?

It would be hard to pick between our community of incredible, awe-inspiring, dedicated staffers at Chapman, and the fun of bumping into students and families in the buses, streets, and shops of NW/SW Portland.

YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHEN NOT TEACHING?

When not spending time with my family, you might find me watching Manchester United or FC St. Pauli football matches, at my workshop building musical instruments, or trail running in Washington Park.
