PPS District Calendar 2023-2024 School Year

A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL VAN DER WOLF

Greetings Chapman Swift Families!

Welcome to this year’s first school-year edition of the Chimney Flyer, our bi-weekly school newsletter. This will come out every other Friday evening.

This has been such a joyous start to the school year. Students are clearly so happy to be back in school, and for the first year for many of them, it’s a year without new protocols and procedures to learn and having to prepare for the unknown. It’s been a relatively smooth couple of weeks with lots of smiles and laughter. Superintendent Guerrero joined us for our first day of kindergarten this week to savor these moments - the tears and smiles alike.

We have so much going on this month. Our Fall Festival/100 Year Celebration, Back-To-School Night, and our first Round-Up of the year. For new families: our Round-Ups are a weekly assembly. Twice a month we hold them in the auditorium. (The other times we hold them virtually over a Google meet.) Families are invited to join our live Round-Ups - they start right at 8:00 and we try to keep them short (15-20 minutes tops). Our very first one is next Friday (9/15) and is truly a special experience - our Cheer Round-Up. We will be holding this one outside on the turf. Families are invited to join by creating a circle around the students who will be performing their grade-level cheers. I hope you can join us for one of my favorite Chapman traditions!

Some other important info:

  • Please sign up for Remind! This is a platform that the school and some teachers use to communicate with families. You can read all about it here: Remind App for Students and Families

  • We love recess. We really do. And there are sometimes that outside factors make us stay indoors. If it is raining, we typically stay outside--we have a covered area that kids who want to stay dry can play under and we have a turf that does not get muddy in the rain. However, if our typical Oregon rain turns into a torrential downpour, we call for an indoor recess in which students remain in their classroom and can do quiet activities, such as playing board games or drawing. Another thing that leads us to stay indoors is the air quality. We use the following resources to determine if students should stay inside: AQ Guidance, Air Quality Index

  • Our Chapman Family Handbook and School Calendar should have been sent home this week. Please look through your child’s backpack if you haven’t seen it yet and review our school’s policies and practices.

NEWS FROM THE PTA
  • The Next PTA Meeting is Sep. 13th from 6-7:30 pm IN PERSON at the Chapman Library!

It’s a great way to stay in-the-know about news & events happening around school, to share your ideas and to strengthen our school community.

We want the PTA to be an opportunity for everyone. If financial dues are a hardship, please select the ‘scholarship membership’ option when signing up.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING AT CHAPMAN?

I wanted to share that coming to Chapman has been a great learning experience for me. I am amazed at how friendly and supportive of each other everyone is. I appreciate collaborative efforts, especially for school wide celebrations and events like the school play. There is just so much fun happening at Chapman!

YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL?

When I am not at school, I like spending time with my family. We love to do anything in nature, go to the beach, the mountain, swim in a lake, go on a bike ride, a hike or camping out. I also appreciate down time with a good movie.

TEACHERS & STAFF NEED SNACKS FOR STUDENTS!

Please consider donating to our all-school snack closet throughout the year.
