A NOTE FROM VICE PRINCIPAL CORONA

Swift Community,

I want to welcome you all to the end of the month of October. With it comes some exciting events at Chapman as well as some preparing for what may come. As you might have heard, there have been many meetings for more than a year between PPS and the union representing district educators, Portland Association of Teachers. We would like to share a link for families to prepare in the event that there is a strike.

This Family Resource page gives the community a chance to prepare for online learning, access to other needs like meals or mental health as well as special education plans for some students.

Also around the corner, you will hear teachers are preparing to roll out a new report card. The grading period ends the first week of November, but we thought it would be good to start getting familiar with it and what information you can find on your child’s report.

This is the New Report Card page which goes into detail about how to understand it better. We plan on printing and having those ready to go home in student’s backpacks by Thursday November 9th.

On another note, BINGO for Books was a blast! Many families came to enjoy a root beer float and a fun game of BINGO. More importantly, students were able to take away a few books for free to add to their collection of books to read, because reading is knowledge. Thank you Ms. Rosoff for organizing and Ms. Keudell for being the voice of BINGO wisdom.

You might have heard, we are having a costume parade on October 31st at 9am. More details to come as the day comes closer. Just remember for costumes, no inflatables, no depictions of violence or weapons for props and no full-face coverings.

This week’s LIVE Round-up came with a beautiful song from the 4th graders about RESPECT. Please continue to instill in your children the value of the golden rule, by respecting each other we are respecting ourselves and our SWIFT community can continue to ‘rise above’.

Thank you.

PPS-PAT Bargaining Information

On Oct. 19, the Portland Association of Teachers, the union representing PPS educators, notified the district of their intent to strike, which would begin Nov. 1.

The Chapman PTA is working closely with our teachers and administration to get you as much information as soon as we can get it.

The PPS Contingency website has lots of useful information for families, including where to find resources while schools are closed, as well as how to talk to your kids about the strike.

The Chapman PTA is planning a special edition of the Chimney Flyer to go out next week, both via email and printed in back-packs. Stay tuned!

You can find information about the bargaining process here and here.

Volunteers needed

If you're able to lend a hand during the week of the Scholastic Book Fair, please sign up for a shift on the Membership Toolkit Book Fair page.

The Chapman Foundation Needs You!

Chapman Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Friends of Chapman. Our goal the last few years has been to provide funding to staff 1 or more Educational Assistants (EA's) for the school. The last 2 years we have funded 1 EA per year. This year our goal is to raise $30,000 for 1 EA position for the 2024-2025 school year.  In order to do so, we need help from Chapman parents/community in the coordination of fundraising efforts. Please note, with more volunteers in the foundation, it means lighter work for each.

Here are positions that we need filled:

Co-Foundation President: This year we are needing to fill the position of co-foundation President to assist our current Foundation President, Anne Usher, who is in your last year. This position will help with coordination of all Foundation fundraising and will work with PTA and Chapman community to come up with new ways to generate fundraising for the school. This position is about 2-4 hrs a month.

Foundation Treasurer: For this year, this position will shadow our current Foundation Treasurer, Cari Schward, and will then take over the position for the 2024-2025 school year. It is important to fill this position this year as this is the last year that Cari will be a parent to a Chapman student (her child is in 5th grade). This position is about 2-3 hrs a month at the most.

Brick Engraving Coordinator: This position is about a 5-7 hr total a year position. This position will work on selling brick engravings in the spring and will then coordinate the engravings in the summer.

Spring event with PTA - foundation helper: We are looking at working with the PTA to provide a fundraising effort at the spring community event. We need someone on the foundation to help with this joint effort.

Questions, please email Foundation President at anniedusher@gmail.com.
