A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL VAN DER WOLF

Greetings Chapman Families!

At this week’s PTA meeting, a topic came up about WIN time, Reading Results, and our tiered intervention model. At Chapman, we implemented what we called WIN time right after we came back from the shutdown in the fall of 2020. WIN stands for What I Need and our intention was to provide all students with an opportunity to get reading intervention or extension based on what their particular need was. We started small, only having WIN time in a couple of grade levels for 30 minutes a few times a week, but found that it was successful enough and so very much needed that we implemented it in all 1st-5th grade classes the following year. Some district leaders came out to see it in action and observed another school doing a similar program. They decided that all schools needed to implement this and now every elementary school in PPS has WIN time. They also directed schools to offer 45 minute WIN blocks for all 4th and 5th graders.

During WIN time, we use a tiered model to determine student needs. All students take reading assessments and then our team creates groups from there. Tier III are our students who are the most behind grade level in reading. Tier II are students that are just below grade level, and then Tier I are students who are at or above grade-level. Your student may go to a different classroom during WIN as we have multiple intervention teachers supporting classroom teachers. Ms. Rosoff, our Reading Specialist, and her assistant, Ms. Jill, work with our students. Their WIN groups are typically 2-4 students each so that they can get very specific instruction. Tier II students are served by some classroom teachers and by Reading Results, a program that the PTA has been instrumental in keeping at Chapman. Tier I students are served by classroom teachers. In most grades, some teachers take some of the Tier II students that don’t go to Reading Results while other teachers take the at or above grade level students. It’s important to note that we keep these groups flexible. As students grow and improve in their reading achievement, they will move into a different group with a different teacher. Ask your child where they go during WIN time and what they’re learning about!

WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK!

Dear Chapman Families,

There is an important annual PPS survey, the Successful Schools Survey, that we are asking you to complete. The feedback in this survey plays a critical role in decision-making about the future direction of Chapman and the District.

I remember how busy I was when my children were young and often skipped surveys. However, this survey really is the "one" we all need to complete. The survey is available in multiple languages.

Public school leadership has a responsibility to base decisions around identified student and family needs and other feedback from this survey. Your responses are confidential and there will be District transparency about the survey's collective feedback and implications.

We will also be asking students in grades 3-5 to take the survey in their class. Please email me if you do not want your child to take this survey at:  stblack@pps.net

DEADLINE:                              Friday, December 6th

TEACHERS & STAFF LOVE COFFEE

It's official - our teachers and Chapman staff love (read: need) coffee. And on in-person Round-Up days, we like to show our appreciation by providing door-to-door coffee cart service. We need 2-3 volunteers to provide homemade or store bought treats for teachers & school staff, along with coffee. Coffee can be brought in or brewed at the school. Volunteers roll the coffee cart to each classroom, distributing coffee, treats and joy to teachers, helpers and staff. If you're interested in volunteering, you can sign up here.

HELP NEEDED

Each year we need help shopping for the non-perishable items in the family food baskets. We provide the list, you shop and deliver the food to a member of the PTA.Sign up to shop here.

NOVEMBER GIVING UPDATE

Traditionally we have solicited donations as part of a November giving campaign. This year we have chosen to forgo this effort given our shift to a larger fundraiser in the spring via the FUNd Run.

However, please don’t forget that Giving Tuesday is Dec. 3. This is a great opportunity to give to the PTA through your company’s giving portal as they often generously match your donations. Please reach out to chapmanschoolpta@gmail.com if you have any questions about donating through your employers.

Thank you for your generosity!

WHAT'S READING RESULTS?

Has your student mentioned Reading Results to you? Are you curious about what it is?

Reading Results partners with schools to support students in becoming successful readers. Reading by third grade is crucial to a child’s educational development. Falling behind creates challenges that negatively impact a child’s education and self-esteem for years to come. Reading Results is committed to helping struggling learners get on the path toward academic success and a brighter future.

More information can be found here.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

PPS Indian Education has gifted each school with the 9 Federally Recognized tribal flags to display in each school. Tribal flags create an awareness of Native American history and reinforces Native American pride among students, educators and community members. The flags are in Chapman's front entrance. There are QR codes on the wall so that you can learn more about each flag.
