Greetings Chapman Families!
At this week’s PTA meeting, a topic came up about WIN time, Reading Results, and our tiered intervention model. At Chapman, we implemented what we called WIN time right after we came back from the shutdown in the fall of 2020. WIN stands for What I Need and our intention was to provide all students with an opportunity to get reading intervention or extension based on what their particular need was. We started small, only having WIN time in a couple of grade levels for 30 minutes a few times a week, but found that it was successful enough and so very much needed that we implemented it in all 1st-5th grade classes the following year. Some district leaders came out to see it in action and observed another school doing a similar program. They decided that all schools needed to implement this and now every elementary school in PPS has WIN time. They also directed schools to offer 45 minute WIN blocks for all 4th and 5th graders.
During WIN time, we use a tiered model to determine student needs. All students take reading assessments and then our team creates groups from there. Tier III are our students who are the most behind grade level in reading. Tier II are students that are just below grade level, and then Tier I are students who are at or above grade-level. Your student may go to a different classroom during WIN as we have multiple intervention teachers supporting classroom teachers. Ms. Rosoff, our Reading Specialist, and her assistant, Ms. Jill, work with our students. Their WIN groups are typically 2-4 students each so that they can get very specific instruction. Tier II students are served by some classroom teachers and by Reading Results, a program that the PTA has been instrumental in keeping at Chapman. Tier I students are served by classroom teachers. In most grades, some teachers take some of the Tier II students that don’t go to Reading Results while other teachers take the at or above grade level students. It’s important to note that we keep these groups flexible. As students grow and improve in their reading achievement, they will move into a different group with a different teacher. Ask your child where they go during WIN time and what they’re learning about!
