Wow--the first week of March flew by! That must be because we were having fun. At Round Up this morning, we saw a phenomenal performance from our 1st graders, we learned about how many students at Chapman are participating in after-school basketball teams, and we watched a slide show of all of the door decorations that classes created as part of a contest to celebrate Black History Month. You can see pictures of all of the doors that students created here: Door decorations. We had a panel of judges (4 students and 2 staff) who were judging based on connections to grade-level learning, creativity, neatness, and student participation. Classes really went out of their way this year to showcase student writing and learning about the important achievements of Black Americans through this activity.
We are in the thick of two big initiatives at school right now - promoting literacy and improving attendance. If you haven’t started yet, this weekend is a great time to start listening to the chapters of The Harlem Charade that Chapman staff have been recording. Listening to audiobooks definitely counts as reading!
are working hard to help every child learn, but it is a huge challenge when students don’t come to school regularly. Did you know that when children miss more than 2 days a month, or 17 days a year they are considered chronically absent? And missing more than 10% of the school year can make it harder to learn to read. We want the very best for our students and believe the best gift we can give them is a good education. If your child is struggling with attendance, please reach out to our school social worker, Darcy Wilde at dwilde@pps.net or at 971-716-5498.
