A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL VAN DER WOLF

Greetings Swift Families!

I hope everyone had a fun weekend. It was so wonderful to see everyone at our Bingo for Books event, and it was especially exciting to see all of the creative costumes kids and adults showed up in. It was so packed that next year, we’re talking about opening up some smaller spaces in addition to the big game in the cafeteria.

As you know, one of our big school improvement goals is to increase students’ attendance rates. Specifically our goal reads: By June 2028, the overall percentage of students with good or acceptable attendance rates will increase by 15%, from 61% to 76%. Our 1st quarter data shows that 73% of our students had good or acceptable attendance. This looks great compared to our last year’s overall data, however it is slightly lower than last year’s quarter 1 data. This makes sense as attendance rates are always higher at the beginning of the year. One thing you can do to help--we have quite a bit of vacation time and long weekends built into our schedule. Try to build vacations around those times when we have several non-instructional days in a row to try and minimize the number of days out of school.

Report cards will be coming out this week. Parents and guardians will be able to view report cards on the ParentVue app by the end of the day this Friday. We will be sending home paper copies in your child’s weekly folder next week. As next Tuesday is Veteran’s Day, we will be sending weekly folders home on Wednesday. You may not see many comments on this quarter’s report card. This is because teachers will be meeting with you in person during parent teacher conferences later this month to review your child’s performance in more detail.

Warmly,

Principal Van Der Wolf

WHAT'S READING RESULTS?

Has your student mentioned Reading Results to you? Are you curious about what it is?

Reading Results partners with schools to support students in becoming successful readers. Reading by third grade is crucial to a child’s educational development. Falling behind creates challenges that negatively impact a child’s education and self-esteem for years to come. Reading Results is committed to helping struggling learners get on the path toward academic success and a brighter future.

We need and value your feedback!

Dear Chapman Families,

November is when PPS gathers feedback from families, students, and staff through our Successful Schools Survey. This survey is the key tool PPS uses to understand experiences in each school. Your feedback is used to identify Chapman's strengths and areas of improvement that will guide our future work.

Click Here to Take the Family Survey

Survey Open: November 3rd to December 8th

Student Survey:

Students in 3rd through 5th grades will take the survey.  I will be going into classrooms this month to guide students through the survey. The student survey gathers perceptions about school safety, school climate, teacher-student relationships, sense of belonging, student engagement, and student relationships.

The survey is confidential. No one outside of the survey manager will be able to link responses back to individuals.

Survey Language Options: English, Spanish, Russian, Somali, Vietnamese & Chinese.

If you would like more information about the survey, or would like to opt your child out of taking the survey, please email Steffany Black, School Counselor at stblack@pps.net.

FIFTH GRADE FAMILIES

As we prepare for your child's middle school transition throughout 5th grade, I will keep you updated about important transition activities.

Right now, the most important event to be aware of is the PPS Choice School Application process and deadline:

  1. Choice School Lottery Process: This is a process where you can apply for your child to attend a PPS Choice School versus their home middle school, West Sylvan.  Applicants are selected via lottery.
  2. Nov 12th - Dec 12th is the timeframe when you need to submit the Choice School application.

Below is the link for the Moving to Middle School 2026-27 Choice School PPS web page with more information about the application, choice school options, and contact numbers should you have specific questions.

SNAP BENEFITS ASSISTANCE

Many in our community rely on SNAP to supplement their food expenses. The Chapman PTA has set up a separate fundraising link specifically for donations while a federal decision is being made on SNAP benefits.

If you're finding yourself in need and don't know where to turn, you can reach out to chapmanschoolpta@gmail.com or dwilde@pps.net and we'll assist in any way we can, completely confidentially.

And here is a list of locations offering free or reduced food and beverages.
