A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL VAN DER WOLF

Greetings Chapman Families and Happy New Year!

In this morning’s Round Up, we had some timely reminders about the importance of following schoolwide and classroom behavior expectations from our fabulous 5th Grade Student Leadership Team. They not only shared about what the expectations were but talked with students about why they were important. I shared that my own child, when she was in grade school, struggled with following behavior expectations in school until she made a New Year’s Resolution to act more like one of her role models. She asked herself every day, what would this person do? And I was  shocked by how effective that was! She still struggled, but had a much easier time of following her teachers’ expectations and developing positive relationships over time. Her role model? Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter books. I told students this story today and encouraged them to look around for students who are good role models--the ones who are helpful and kind, the students who are working hard and being great problem-solvers. We have so many students who display our Chapman values of Compassion, Collaboration, Inquisitiveness, and Integrity that it’s pretty easy to find positive role models in our community!

With this first week back from Winter Break, one of the most helpful expectations that we could use your support with is our no toys/personal electronics policy. I know children are very excited to show off their new toys to their friends, but these items must stay at home. This includes sports equipment and smart watches. If they bring anything from home, the rule is “Off and Away.” Students will be asked to keep prohibited items in their backpacks. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please check with your teacher or let me know if you have any questions.

GO HOME FOLDER HELP

The folders are proving to be a successful way to get information home, but we need help on Tuesday mornings getting them stuffed. Do you have an hour to spare? Sign up here

Tall/Small Dance Volunteers & Info:

We’re excited for our second Tall / Small Dance! Volunteers will be needed the day of the event to help decorate the gym, help with entry and monitoring doors — more details to come. Not to worry, we’ll be more spread out this year to ensure a fun and smooth evening for everyone.

Please note that all “Smalls” must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (“Talls”) for entry.

Wear your best pink and red and come ready to dance!

Questions or interested in volunteering, reach out to Chelsea Miller at miller.chelseaann@gmail.com.

That OBOB clock is ticking . . .

Is your 3rd, 4th or 5th grade student participating in OBOB this year? If so, teams will begin their trivia battles next month! The trivia questions are all related to the books from the OBOB reading list and students have been meeting weekly with their team.

Ways to support OBOB at home are to encourage your student to read or listen to their OBOB books, help them practice memorizing the titles & authors and practice trivia questions with them! Reach out to Katie LaBonte (klacasse18@gmail.com) if you have any questions!
