A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL VAN DER WOLF

Happy Summer Swift Families! What a stupendous year this turned out to be, and we ended it with all of the celebrating and joy your hard-working students deserved. Within the past few weeks, we’ve held both our fun-filled FUNdRun and our Field Day, students put their talents on display at the Talent Show, we had our last Round Up of the year and honored our most beloved (and retiring) music teacher, Mr. Clark, and we said goodbye to our 5th, now 6th graders with a beautiful promotion ceremony and a schoolwide clap out. It’s truly been a great year to be a Swift!

Many Many Thank Yous! One of our June celebrations included acknowledging volunteers who’ve worked in classrooms, the garden, and at recess. Volunteers chaperoned field trips and coached Oregon Battle of the Books. And of course, volunteers from our PTA organized some of the most fun events we’ve ever had! Every volunteer makes a huge difference for our school and we appreciate you!

Next year, we will be experiencing some staffing changes. Some of these changes are still being worked out at the district, so you’ll see a few TBDs on our list for next year. Here’s what we know so far:

K: Ms. Mulvihill, Mr. Riccardi

1st: Mr. Franklin, Ms. Mabry, Ms. Sutton

2nd: Mr. Kelley (new teacher to Chapman), Ms. Schaedig

3rd: Ms. Lyons, Ms. McLaughlin

4th: Ms. Anderson (new teacher to Chapman), Mr. Bush, Ms. Gennie

5th: Ms. Ritzinger, Mr. Schreib

Music: TBD

PE: TBD

Library: Ms. Juska

Art: Mr. Gostovich

Please read on for an important message from Ms. Rosoff our Reading Specialist:

Happy Summer! Your kids worked hard this year, learned a lot, and now it is time for them to have some fun. HOWEVER, did you know that research has shown that students can lose 20% to 30% of their learning over the summer months? Here are some ideas for you to help prevent the summer slide!

1- READ and WRITE EVERY DAY! 15 minutes is the minimum!

2- Access links to learning opportunities on this Soaring Into Summer page that I created.

3- If the slide does not load, see the links below for

APPS on Classlink accessed through My PPS. Click here for the Instructions to log on. You can log onto I-Ready Math here, also. Here are my top picks to keep up reading skills-

** LEXIA (available through July)

** Learning A-Z

* Learning Ally

* Sora

*Tumblebooks

If you google search WORDWALL Fundations, a bunch of fun games will come up. Choose a game that matches your child's level.

Khan Academy Kids: If your student is in Kindergarten or First grade, OR, if your child was in Reading Results or Reading Intervention this year, this is a great place to start!

Khan Academy 2nd grade: If your child is able to read stories independently, this is a good option for practice.

Decodable stories

Have a WONDERFUL summer!

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF MR. CLARK?

If you missed the last Round-Up of the school year, you may not have heard that our beloved music teacher, Mr. Clark, is retiring. After 25 years as part of the Chapman community, he will be very missed. His send-off was full of surprises, including a first-class flight simulation from the staff and a reworking of the Billboard Top 100 classic* "Pumpkin Bones" from the entire student body.

Cheers to Mr. Clark - the Chapman Community wishes him the best in his retirement.

*Not a fact-checked statistic

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

From those on the PTA, we'd be remiss if we didn't give a huge shout out and thank you to the Executive Board Members who have served for the last two school years. They have been relentless with their time and energy giving back to the school and making this community great.

  • Chelsea Miller, President (Lincoln, 2nd)
  • Courtney Keating, Treasurer (Coen, 5th & Cy, 2nd)
  • Katie LaBonte, Secretary (Corinne, 5th & Charlie, 3rd)

We will introduce the newly elected board members at the beginning of the 25-26 school year. These are some big shoes to fill!

If you're interested in joining the PTA, you can email chapmanschoolpta@gmail.com with questions, or look for the first meeting coming in September. All are welcome!

VOLUNTEER UPDATE

If you are interested in volunteering next school year, please head to the volunteer sign up page and make sure your background check is up to date. It's good for 3 years, so adults who began volunteering in Kindergarten and now have a student going into 3rd grade will need to update!

SPRING BIKE TRAIN

The Spring Bike Train was a huge success! Thanks to all of the kids and adults who came out to join in the fun. Look out for information about the (rebranded) Bike Bus next school year.

CHAMPAN FUND RUN

Huge thank you to all who came out to help make the FunD Run a giant success! We raised over $24,000 that will help pay for:

  • Community Cares Fund
  • School Field Trips
  • Scholarships for Friendly House Camps
  • Playground Improvements
